Barcelona are increasingly confident that sustained pressure from both the club and Julian Alvarez will eventually push Atletico Madrid into selling the Argentine striker, despite the Spanish capital side’s stubborn refusal to negotiate.
The Catalan club began exploring a move for Alvarez – currently Atletico’s main centre-forward – several months ago, and regard him as their priority signing to succeed Robert Lewandowski at the tip of the attack for the 2026-27 season.
Yet weeks of talks have not brought a breakthrough, leaving new head coach Hansi Flick anxious for clarity over his squad planning. According to Spanish newspaper Marca, Barcelona’s hierarchy is urging the German to remain calm, insisting their strategy will pay off.
Barcelona pin hopes on ‘fatigue and pressure’
Club officials at the Camp Nou believe their approach of “pressing and wearing down” the opposition will soon bear fruit, whether by convincing the player to escalate his stance or by forcing Atletico to reassess their position.
Alvarez is seen internally as the undisputed first-choice target to lead Barcelona’s forward line in the medium term. Coaching staff, executives and board members are all said to remain convinced that the World Cup winner can be brought to Catalonia, even after Atletico rejected Barca’s latest bid.
Within the club, the pressure that Alvarez himself might exert is viewed as potentially decisive.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta recently underlined the club’s wider stance on unsettled stars, in remarks that many interpreted as a pointed message to players at other clubs.
“عندما يرغب لاعب في الرحيل، فان موقف برشلونة كنادي هو اننا سنسهل عليه الامر اذا اراد مغادرة برشلونة.. لا يمكن لناد كبير ان يتحمل وجود لاعبين غير راضين,”
he said.
Possible training boycott mooted
Marca reports that the 26-year-old forward is considering not appearing for Atletico Madrid’s first pre-season training session on 10 August – the date set by compatriot coach Diego Simeone for the World Cup runner-up’s return to work.
Barcelona believe Atletico will eventually be forced to soften their stance, not only because of any firm action the Argentina international may take in the coming days – with Alvarez described as determined to join Barca – but also due to the structure of the Catalan club’s proposal.
Although the offer is said to be substantial, Barcelona are making clear to Atletico that it does not match the Madrid club’s expectations, which are anchored in a €500m release clause, and that it will not remain on the table indefinitely.
Setting an expiry date on the bid is seen at Barcelona as a deliberate negotiating tool designed to increase pressure on Atletico and underline that they are unlikely to receive a higher sum in the future.
Atletico hold the line – for now
Atletico Madrid’s board, however, remain firm in their refusal to sanction a sale, despite Alvarez having already made it clear he wishes to leave the club, a position he is understood to have reiterated while on international duty with Argentina at the 2026 World Cup.
The Spanish side are keen to avoid publicly placing responsibility on Alvarez for his stance and decision. Instead, they are leaning heavily on his agent to manage the situation and keep relations between player and club from deteriorating further.
Atletico still hope to persuade the striker to stay at the Metropolitano, even as Barcelona step up their efforts and Hansi Flick pushes for a swift resolution ahead of his long-term squad planning for the 2026-27 campaign.
With the start of pre-season approaching and a potential training no-show looming, the standoff around Julian Alvarez looks set to become one of the defining transfer sagas in Spanish football over the coming months.
