Jayden Adams was honoured at the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony on Monday night as part of a tribute to football figures who died this year.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder was remembered alongside legendary players Kevin Keegan and Franco Baresi during the special ceremony.
Adams died in July 2026, aged 25, only weeks after representing South Africa at the FIFA World Cup. He played a key role as Bafana Bafana reached the last 16 of the tournament.
The midfielder made his international debut in 2022 and went on to win 13 caps for South Africa, scoring two goals.
A moment of silence was held in Adams’ memory during the World Cup semi-final between Argentina and England following reports of his death.
His appearance in the Ballon d’Or tribute recognised his contribution to South African football and his performances for the national team on the international stage.
Adams began his professional career with Stellenbosch before establishing himself as one of the leading midfielders in the PSL. Mamelodi Sundowns signed him in 2025, after his progress had attracted the attention of the club.
With Sundowns, known as the Brazilians, Adams helped the club win the CAF Champions League for the second time. His performances also helped him regain his place in the Bafana Bafana squad.
