Ivory Coast star Kessié becomes free agent after Al Ahli exit

Ivory Coast midfielder Franck Kessié has officially left Al Ahli following the expiration of his contract in June, bringing an end to a successful three-year spell in Saudi Arabia.

The Saudi Pro League club confirmed his departure through its official X (formerly Twitter) account, expressing gratitude to the 29-year-old for his contribution during a period in which he played a central role in their domestic and continental success.

In their message, Al Ahli paid tribute to the midfielder’s influence at the club, highlighting his importance both on and off the pitch as he helped guide the team through one of the most successful eras in their recent history.

Kessié leaves the club as a free agent after a spell marked by consistency, leadership and silverware.

During his time in Saudi Arabia, he was part of a squad that achieved notable continental success, including winning the AFC Champions League twice, in 2025 and 2026.

His performances in midfield were key to Al Ahli’s dominance in key competitions, with the Ivorian combining physical strength, tactical discipline and goal-scoring ability from midfield positions.

Across his three-year spell, Kessié made 119 appearances for the club, scoring 26 goals and providing 14 key passes, underlining his contribution in both defensive and attacking phases of play.

The former Barcelona and AC Milan midfielder arrived in Saudi Arabia after an established European career, and quickly became an important figure in Al Ahli’s midfield structure.

His experience at the highest level of European football helped stabilise the squad and elevate its competitiveness in both domestic and continental competitions.

Now a free agent, Kessié is expected to attract interest from several clubs, with reports suggesting a possible return to Europe could be on the horizon.

Among the clubs reportedly linked with the midfielder is Italian side Juventus, who are said to be monitoring his situation closely.

A move back to Europe would mark another major chapter in Kessié’s career, having previously played in top leagues including Serie A and La Liga before his switch to Saudi Arabia.

His departure also highlights the continued movement of high-profile African players between Europe, the Middle East and other emerging football markets, reflecting the global demand for experienced midfield talent.

Al Ahli’s brief farewell message, “Frank Kessié, thank you 💚”, captured the club’s appreciation for his contribution during a successful period in their history.
