Italy strengthened their position ahead of the Euro 2028 draw with a 3-1 victory over Turkiye in Bologna, moving one point clear of Belgium and securing a seeded place.
The result came before November’s fixtures against France and Belgium, with Italy now in a favourable position as they prepare for those important matches.
Roberto Mancini made extensive changes to his team, keeping only Donnarumma and Bastoni from the previous starting XI. The reshuffled side lacked some of its usual fluency, but Scamacca still provided the decisive contribution.
The striker produced a powerful finish to open the scoring, even though he was less assured in possession than Pio Esposito. His ability to make the difference in front of goal nevertheless gave Italy the platform they needed.
Doumbia was one of Italy’s most impressive performers on his first start for the national team. The midfielder became increasingly influential as the match progressed, helping to build the move for Scamacca’s goal and making a series of well-timed runs into space from midfield.
He went close to scoring on two occasions and offered an encouraging indication of his ability at international level. His movement also gave Italy an additional threat when they attacked from deeper positions.
Turkiye improved after the interval and repeatedly looked to exploit the space behind Italy’s defence. That opening appeared whenever Bastoni or Mancini moved forward to press, creating problems for the hosts as they attempted to maintain control.
Vergara also caught the eye, producing a stronger performance than Maldini and adding to the belief that he could have an important future with Italy. His display was another positive from a game in which Mancini gave several younger players an opportunity.
After the final whistle, Mancini said emerging players such as Romano and Vergara would require another 10 to 15 matches at this level to continue their development.
The victory leaves Italy one point ahead of Belgium before the two November meetings with France and Belgium, while the seeded position for the Euro 2028 draw provides an added benefit from the result.
