It meant a lot”: Ekong reflects on emotional AFCON campaign

Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has said Nigeria’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign carried greater personal significance for him than his experience at the FIFA World Cup.

Reflecting on his international career, the defender described the continental tournament as one of the most meaningful chapters of his time with the national team, even though Nigeria did not secure the title.

“It meant a lot,” he said.

Ekong explained that the emotional intensity surrounding the competition, combined with the unity it inspired among supporters, made the experience particularly memorable. According to him, the connection between the team and the Nigerian public stood out in a way that went beyond the results on the pitch.

“It was a proud moment,” he implied.

Nigeria’s journey through the tournament, which saw the team reach the final before falling short, generated widespread enthusiasm at home. Ekong noted that the campaign brought people together across the country, creating a shared sense of hope and excitement.

“It brought people together,” he noted.

While the FIFA World Cup is widely regarded as the pinnacle of international football, Ekong suggested that the AFCON experience resonated more deeply with him on both a personal and national level. He pointed to the unique cultural and emotional importance of the tournament within Africa as a key factor.

“It felt different,” he added.

The defender also emphasised the effort put in by the squad throughout the competition, highlighting their commitment despite the disappointment of not lifting the trophy.

“We gave everything,” he stressed.

Ekong’s remarks underline the significance of the Africa Cup of Nations within African football, where success is often measured not only in silverware but also in national pride and collective identity. For many players, representing their country in the tournament carries profound meaning, reflecting both sporting ambition and a broader connection to supporters.

For Ekong, the campaign was about more than results. He described it as an opportunity to represent Nigeria on a major stage and to inspire millions of fans who followed the team’s progress.

As he continues his career, the memories of that tournament remain a source of motivation. The experience, he suggested, has become a defining part of his football journey.

In his view, certain moments in the sport transcend trophies and statistics. Instead, they leave a lasting impression that shapes a player’s legacy.

And for Ekong, Nigeria’s AFCON run stands as one of those moments.
