Ismaila Sarr emerges as early favourite for African Ballon d’Or

Ismaila Sarr has emerged as the leading contender for the next African Ballon d’Or after an outstanding 2025-26 campaign with Crystal Palace and a strong showing for Senegal at the 2026 World Cup.

The 28-year-old winger is currently considered the standout candidate to succeed Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi as the continent’s top individual player.

Sarr’s performances for Crystal Palace have placed him ahead of his closest rivals, with his goalscoring record and contribution to Senegal strengthening his case for the prestigious award.

Sarr’s exceptional season

Sarr enjoyed a highly productive campaign with Crystal Palace, making 45 appearances in all competitions during the 2025-26 season.

He scored 21 goals and registered two assists, accumulating 3,612 minutes on the pitch.

His performances also helped establish him as one of the most influential African players in European football. His current market value is put at €45m.

According to Foot Mercato, Sarr is currently viewed as the most prominent candidate for the African Ballon d’Or, with his achievements during the season giving him a significant advantage over other contenders.

One of the highlights of his campaign came in the European Conference League, where he finished as the competition’s leading scorer.

That achievement further enhanced his reputation at continental level and added weight to his claim for the individual award.

World Cup performances strengthen his case

Sarr’s form was not restricted to club football.

The Senegal international also played a major role for his country during the 2026 World Cup, staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

He scored four goals during the tournament, making him the highest-scoring African player at the World Cup.

His performances for Senegal provided another significant boost to his Ballon d’Or credentials, particularly given the importance of international football in assessing Africa’s leading individual players.

The combination of his club statistics and international contribution has consequently put Sarr in a strong position as the race for the award begins to take shape.

Manchester United among clubs interested

Sarr’s impressive performances have also generated considerable interest in the transfer market.

Manchester United are among the clubs reportedly monitoring the Senegalese forward, while Turkish side Fenerbahce have also shown interest.

Crystal Palace, however, are determined to keep the player and regard him as an important part of their plans for the future.

The club’s desire to retain Sarr could make a potential transfer difficult. Any club hoping to persuade Palace to sell him would currently need to make an offer of at least €60m.

For now, Palace’s position leaves Sarr’s future uncertain, although his performances have already made him one of the most sought-after African players in European football.

With the African Ballon d’Or race yet to be formally decided, Sarr’s remarkable season has nevertheless made him the early favourite.

His 21 goals for Crystal Palace, Conference League scoring achievement and four World Cup goals for Senegal provide a compelling statistical foundation for his candidacy.

A place among Africa’s greats

Winning the African Ballon d’Or would put Sarr among a distinguished group of players who have claimed the prestigious award.

Twelve Arab players have previously won the African Golden Ball, representing Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia and Algeria.

Morocco’s winners include Ahmed Faras, Mohamed Timoumi, Badou Zaki, Mustapha Hadji and Achraf Hakimi.

Algeria has produced three winners: Lakhdar Belloumi, Rabah Madjer and Riyad Mahrez.

Egypt’s winners include Mahmoud El Khatib and Mohamed Salah, who has won the award twice, while Tunisia’s Tarek Dhiab is also among the previous recipients.

Sarr now has the opportunity to add his name to that illustrious list. Based on his performances over the past season, he has made an early and compelling case to become Africa’s next individual star.
