Birligea brace completes Frosinone’s 5-1 rout of Lecce

Frosinone continued their remarkable start to the Serie A season by beating Lecce 5-1, securing a fourth successive home win in Italy’s top flight for the first time in the club’s history.

Matteo Cichella opened the scoring after 25 minutes, drilling a first-time finish into the net after Fares Ghedjemis had laid the ball back to him on the edge of the Lecce penalty area.

Frosinone had already threatened through Ghedjemis, who met Antonio Raimondo’s cross in the opening minute but was denied by Wladimiro Falcone. The Lecce goalkeeper then saved from Giacomo Calo, while at the other end Lorenzo Palmisani produced an excellent stop to keep out Joel Monteiro’s curling attempt.

The home side were the league’s leading scorers inside the opening 30 minutes before kick-off, with nine goals in that period this season, and they continued to look dangerous after taking the lead.

Giorgi Kvernadze missed an opportunity to double the advantage when he was found in space on a rapid counter-attack, with Falcone keeping out his effort as it headed towards the inside of the right-hand post.

Kvernadze soon made a decisive contribution, however, winning a penalty shortly before half-time. Calo converted confidently to give Frosinone a 2-0 lead.

Lecce were unhappy with the decision-making before the second goal, having appealed unsuccessfully for a penalty moments earlier. Referee Rosario Abisso and VAR rejected their claims.

Eusebio Di Francesco’s side began the second half with greater purpose, but Youssef Maleh sent a shot well over Palmisani’s goal. Frosinone quickly reasserted control, with Falcone denying Ghedjemis before making another fine save from Anthony Oyono’s header at the resulting corner.

The contest was effectively settled before the hour mark. Kvernadze released the in-form Raimondo with a precise through ball, and the striker made no mistake from close range to score his eighth league goal of the season.

Frosinone continued to find openings, and substitute Daniel Birligea needed only two minutes to make an impact. He stayed just onside and, following a VAR review, was awarded his first goal for the club.

Monteiro gave Lecce something to show for their efforts with a late consolation, but Birligea restored the four-goal margin in added time with his second goal of the match.

The result leaves Lecce with four defeats in their past five league matches, alongside one win, and they sit 14th. Frosinone are sixth after scoring at least four goals in each of their past three league games, a sequence featuring two wins and one draw.

Giorgi Kvernadze was named Flashscore’s Man of the Match.
