Intelligence or Gamesmanship? Meriah’s Spot-Kick Divides Opinion

Yassine Meriah scored a late penalty to secure a narrow but significant victory for Espérance Sportive de Tunis against Jeunesse Sportive d’Omrane, but the manner of his goal has sparked widespread debate.

The match, played on Monday evening in the 28th round of the Tunisian League, ended 1-0 in favour of Esperance. Meriah converted from the penalty spot in the 78th minute, ensuring his side remained firmly in contention for the title.

The result takes Esperance to 60 points, placing them second in the standings, just two points behind leaders Club Africain. With a crucial fixture approaching in the next round, the title race remains finely balanced.

Pre-kick gesture draws mixed reactions

While the goal proved decisive, attention quickly shifted to the moments before the penalty was taken. Television footage captured Meriah glancing towards goalkeeper Montasser Essid in what some interpreted as an attempt to influence the direction of the save.

The incident has divided opinion among fans and observers. Some viewed the gesture as a calculated display of football intelligence, designed to unsettle the goalkeeper. Others argued it crossed into unsporting behaviour intended to gain an unfair advantage.

The debate intensified after a reaction from goalkeeper Montasser Al-Sayed, who addressed the situation on social media. In a post on Instagram, he wrote: “At Esperance, the first thing you learn is manhood… and part of manhood is defending the shirt you wear.”

Goalkeeper’s performance highlighted

Despite conceding the decisive goal, Essid’s performance during the match drew praise. Reports indicate he made six or seven crucial saves to deny Esperance on multiple occasions, keeping his side in contention until the late penalty.

Some observers also dismissed suggestions circulating online that the penalty had been pre-arranged, describing such claims as unfounded given the goalkeeper’s strong display throughout the game.

Background and individual milestones

The match also carried added significance for Essid, who previously developed through Esperance’s ranks before moving to JS Omrane in the summer of 2023 in search of regular playing time.

For Meriah, the goal marked his second of the season. His earlier strike came against AS FAN of Niger in the African Champions League, underlining his occasional but important contributions from defence.

Title race set for decisive phase

As the Tunisian League season approaches its conclusion, Esperance’s victory ensures the pressure remains on leaders Club Africain. The narrow gap at the top of the table means the outcome of the championship could hinge on the next round of fixtures.

However, while the result strengthened Esperance’s title ambitions, the controversy surrounding Meriah’s penalty has ensured that discussion extends beyond the scoreline, highlighting the fine line between tactical ingenuity and perceived gamesmanship in modern football.
