Everton have parted company with Idrissa Gana Gueye, bringing to an end the Senegal midfielder’s second spell at Goodison Park after a total of 236 appearances for the club.
The 34-year-old, capped 135 times by Senegal, first joined Everton in 2016 and became a key figure in midfield before leaving for Paris Saint-Germain, then returned to Merseyside from the French champions in 2022.
Everton paid around four million euros to re-sign Gueye from Paris Saint-Germain two years ago, restoring a player who had previously been sold by the club for 30 million euros following three seasons of strong performances in the Premier League.
Key figure over two spells
Gueye’s initial stint at Everton established him as one of the Premier League’s most effective ball-winning midfielders, earning him a move to Paris Saint-Germain after three years with the Toffees.
His time in France proved underwhelming in comparison to expectations, with the midfielder failing to have the same impact in Ligue 1 as he had shown in England.
That led to his return to Everton in 2022, where he again became an important presence in the centre of the pitch as the club battled in the Premier League.
Return to form at Goodison
Back on familiar ground in Liverpool, Gueye rediscovered much of the influence that had made him a fan favourite during his first spell.
He featured regularly for the side following his move from Paris Saint-Germain and was regarded as a decisive contributor in Everton’s attempts to secure their top-flight status.
Across both periods at Goodison Park, Gueye amassed 236 games in all competitions for the Toffees, underlining his status as one of the club’s most enduring midfielders of the modern era.
International stalwart
On the international stage, Gueye has been a mainstay for Senegal, earning 135 caps for his country.
His long service at international level has run in parallel with a club career that has taken him from the Premier League to Ligue 1 and back to Everton, where his second departure now closes another chapter for both player and club.
