Hull City have reached an agreement with Rayo Vallecano to sign Senegal international defender Nobel Mendy for €20m, with the deal also including several performance-related bonuses.
The Tigers moved for the 21-year-old after being impressed by his progress and performances during last season. According to the latest information from transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the agreement with the Spanish club has now been reached, paving the way for Mendy to move to the Premier League.
The transfer represents a significant step in the young defender’s career after an encouraging campaign with Rayo Vallecano. Mendy made 28 appearances in all competitions last season and scored two goals.
His performances helped attract interest from Hull City, who have now decided to invest heavily in the Senegal international. The agreed €20m fee is significantly higher than the amount Rayo Vallecano paid to secure his permanent signing earlier this summer.
Rayo Vallecano completed the defender’s permanent transfer at the beginning of June for €3.5m. With Mendy’s contract in Madrid due to run until 2030, the club were in a strong position to negotiate a substantial fee for his departure.
The Spanish side will therefore make a considerable profit on the player, despite only having finalised his permanent move a short time ago. Mendy is currently valued at €7.5m, according to the figure cited in the report, meaning the proposed transfer to Hull City would be well above that valuation.
The move will also benefit Real Betis financially. Although the club are not directly involved in the current negotiations between Hull City and Rayo Vallecano, they are due to receive €4m as a result of clauses included in the earlier sale of Mendy.
Those provisions mean Real Betis will share in the income generated by the defender’s move to England. While Rayo Vallecano stand to make the largest financial gain from the agreement, the deal also provides a return for Mendy’s former club.
Mendy was born in Guediawaye and has represented Senegal at international level. His development at Rayo Vallecano, combined with his age and the length of his existing contract, made him an attractive target for Hull City.
The agreement now puts the player on course for a move to the Premier League, with Hull City committing €20m plus additional bonuses to complete the signing. The transfer illustrates the rapid rise of a defender who joined Rayo Vallecano permanently for €3.5m and could now leave the club for a fee almost six times greater, while also generating €4m for Real Betis through the previously agreed clauses.
