Hansi Flick called for players willing to take responsibility during difficult moments last season. At Barcelona, Raphinha has taken on much of that burden this term while wearing the captain’s armband, but Rodri has also established himself as one of the squad’s most influential voices without holding an official leadership role.
According to Marca, the Madrid-born midfielder has quickly become an important figure within the dressing room since arriving at the Catalan club last summer.
Rodri’s adjustment to Barcelona was rapid. He received a warm reception from the supporters from his first appearance in front of them, while his experience and personality helped him gain authority among his team-mates.
His influence was particularly clear on Wednesday. Following Barcelona’s defeats by Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, Rodri joined Raphinha and the rest of the team’s captains in arranging a group lunch designed to strengthen the squad’s unity.
The gesture reflected the wider responsibility the midfielder has assumed inside the group, particularly in a dressing room containing several young players.
Experience behind Barcelona’s decision
Barcelona appeared to have settled their midfield options last summer, yet the club still considered the opportunity to sign Rodri too significant to ignore.
The decision was based on two main factors. Barcelona believed it had the chance to bring in one of the finest midfielders in the world, while also adding a player capable of providing experience, character and leadership to a youthful squad.
His arrival therefore represented more than a footballing decision. Rodri’s record and personality were viewed as potentially important qualities for a team that needed a positive example through both successful and difficult periods.
The international midfielder has since fulfilled that role, becoming a senior presence within the squad while also establishing himself as a key part of Flick’s starting XI.
His impact has extended beyond the pitch. From the first day of his arrival, when he attended the Joan Gamper Trophy match, Rodri was given a highly enthusiastic welcome by the Camp Nou crowd.
That reception was followed by a growing importance to the team itself. Although Raphinha remains the player carrying the captain’s armband and much of the visible responsibility, Rodri’s standing inside the dressing room has developed quickly.
Barcelona are listed in La Liga for a match against Deportivo Alaves on 31 October 2026. Against that backdrop, Rodri’s role illustrates how leadership at the club is not limited to the players formally appointed as captains.
