Pape Gueye has revealed that his move from Olympique de Marseille to Villarreal CF was driven by more than football it was the fulfilment of a personal promise from Marcelino.
The Senegal international explained that the Spanish coach, before leaving Marseille in 2023, made a commitment that would later define his next step.
“As soon as I take a club, I’ll call you”
Gueye recalled the moment clearly, describing it as something that initially felt like a parting remark—but one that eventually became reality.
“I remember that as he was leaving, Marcelino said to me: ‘As soon as I take charge of a club, I’ll definitely give you a call.’”
True to his word, Marcelino after taking over at Villarreal reached out and brought the midfielder into his new project.
From squad option to central figure
At Marseille, Gueye operated within a competitive, star-studded environment where opportunities were often limited.
At Villarreal, however, the dynamic shifted completely. The Spanish side presented him with a clear vision—one built around trust, development, and a more prominent role in midfield.
“At Marseille, there were lots of stars. At Villarreal, it was the first time I was going to be at the forefront of the action,” Gueye explained.
A move built on trust and vision
The transfer highlights a key reality in modern football: relationships and managerial belief can be just as influential as finances or prestige.
Marcelino’s faith in Gueye provided the foundation for a move that offered not just playing time, but responsibility and growth.
A new chapter in Spain
Now settled in Spain, Gueye views the switch as a turning point in his career.
At Villarreal, he is no longer just part of the system he is a central piece within it, tasked with influencing games and driving the team forward.
More than a transfer
Gueye’s story goes beyond a typical move between clubs. It is a reminder that in football, promises matter—and when kept, they can redefine a player’s trajectory.
For the Senegal international, Marcelino’s words were not just reassurance they were the beginning of a new chapter.
