Former Liverpool FC midfielder Thiago Alcantara has paid tribute to former teammates Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson, describing both players as enduring “legends” of the club.
Speaking ahead of the Laureus Awards ceremony in Madrid, Thiago reflected on his time at Anfield and highlighted the impact of the two players, emphasising their lasting influence regardless of where their careers may lead next. He said: “They are legends at the club, both are amazing players, and it doesn’t matter where they play anymore, they will always be great players.”
Praise for Salah’s Legacy
Thiago also addressed discussions surrounding the latter stages of Salah’s Liverpool career, offering a measured response while underlining his admiration for the Egyptian forward. He said: “I wasn’t there, so I can’t judge what happened, but Mohamed always deserves the best.”
The remarks underline the respect Salah commands among former teammates, following years of success at Liverpool where he played a central role in the club’s achievements.
Thiago’s Liverpool Journey
Thiago departed Liverpool at the end of his contract in the summer of 2024 after a period disrupted by injuries. His final season saw limited involvement, with only a handful of appearances, bringing a challenging end to his time on Merseyside.
Despite those difficulties, he was part of a successful era under former manager Jurgen Klopp, contributing to the club’s FA Cup and League Cup triumphs alongside Salah and Robertson.
Transition to Coaching
After leaving Liverpool, Thiago announced his retirement from professional football in July 2025. He subsequently moved into coaching, joining the staff of FC Barcelona as an assistant to head coach Hansi Flick later that year.
Reflecting on his decision to retire, Thiago spoke candidly about the emotional challenge of stepping away from the game. He said: “After all this long struggle to become a football player, and then reach the level I dreamed of, the hardest thing was accepting the end.”
He added: “It wasn’t difficult because of what was to come next, but because I had to give up something I loved deeply, for reasons that were beyond my control. It was painful, but I found inner peace and satisfaction with my career.”
Emotional Return to Anfield
Thiago recently made a return to Anfield as part of a Liverpool Legends fixture, sharing the pitch with former players including Steven Gerrard and John Aldridge, with Klopp also present at the event.
Describing the experience, he said: “It was a wonderful moment, combining the Anfield stadium being so full and playing alongside legends like Gerrard. It was an unforgettable moment and I will always cherish it.”
The occasion also produced a light-hearted moment when Thiago found the net. He recalled: “When I scored, Steven Gerrard came over and jokingly said that this was the first time I had run since I arrived in Liverpool”

Thiago’s reflections offer insight into both his personal journey and the lasting bonds formed during his time at Liverpool. While injuries may have curtailed his playing career, his appreciation for the club and its key figures remains evident.
