Harry Kane says Bayern Munich united by injury setbacks and Vincent Kompany absence

Harry Kane says Bayern Munich have grown closer after a week of contrasting emotions, with coach Vincent Kompany and several key players unavailable through injury.

Bayern face Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday, with Kompany absent after collapsing during training three days before Kane won the Ballon d’Or last week.

Kompany was taken to hospital and diagnosed with meningeal irritation. He was released a few days later but is expected to remain sidelined for some time.

Bayern were also dealt a further blow in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Borussia Dortmund, when Ismael Saibari and Serge Gnabry sustained injuries. Saibari has undergone surgery, while Jamal Musiala and Luis Diaz remain out as they continue their recoveries.

“It was a bit of a rollercoaster of emotions on every end,” Kane told a news conference before Bayern’s match in Madrid.

“A big high for me personally last week, some lows with the boss and the injuries. A lot of extremes. We had to deal with that, and it brought us closer together.”

Despite those disruptions, Kane believes Bayern remain on course. The England striker said the squad must maintain its concentration until the international break later in November, when some of the injured players are expected to return.

Kane missed a penalty and struck the post against Borussia Dortmund, his first appearance since receiving the Ballon d’Or.

He said the result and his own performance would not distract Bayern from the immediate demands of their Champions League fixture.

“For now it is fight for every moment,” Kane said. “We are missing some key players and our coach but it gives everyone an opportunity to prove themselves in this team.”

Kane also said he was “extremely close” to agreeing a contract extension with Bayern. His comments came as the club prepared to face Atletico Madrid without Kompany on the touchline and with his squad further reduced by the latest injuries.
