Hamdi Fathi ruled out of Egypt’s AFCON qualifiers

Egypt midfielder Hamdi Fathi has been ruled out of the Pharaohs’ upcoming international camp after suffering an injury while playing for Qatari club Al Wakrah.

National team manager Ibrahim Hassan confirmed that Fathi will not be available for Egypt’s opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Angola on 25 September and South Sudan on 29 September.

Hassan said the midfielder is unlikely to recover in time to feature in Egypt’s three scheduled matches during the current international period.

Fathi’s absence adds to Egypt’s injury concerns, with Mahmoud Trezeguet and Yasser Ibrahim also unavailable for the upcoming fixtures.

Egypt will begin their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign against Angola before facing South Sudan. The Pharaohs are then scheduled to play South Africa in a friendly on 4 October.

The national team will therefore have to prepare for the qualifying campaign without Fathi as Hassan considers his midfield options for the opening fixtures.
