Gyan backs Semenyo to shine at World Cup for Ghana

Ghana football legend Asamoah Gyan believes Antoine Semenyo will be the central figure for the Black Stars at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing the forward as the current face of the national game.

With Ghana preparing to begin its campaign at the tournament, attention has increasingly turned to Semenyo, who arrives at the World Cup following an impressive season at club level. The striker is expected to play a leading role as the Black Stars seek to make their mark on football’s biggest stage.

Gyan, Ghana’s all-time leading scorer, has acknowledged the expectations surrounding the 26-year-old and believes the forward will be under intense scrutiny throughout the competition.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, the former Black Stars captain said Semenyo would face significant pressure because of both his recent performances and the demands that come with representing the national team.

“There will be a lot of pressure on Semenyo going to the World Cup. Ki People back home have questions about his performance when it comes to the national team, but as a former player and a striker, I have to be in his shoes.”

Gyan suggested that supporters often judge players by the standards they set at club level and that Semenyo’s current status in the game naturally increases expectations whenever he wears Ghana colours.

The former striker said fans would expect the forward to reproduce the same level of performance he has shown for his club, particularly given the prominence of the team he now represents.

“There will be a bit of pressure because of where he’s playing now. When you’re playing for one of the best teams in the world and you come into the national team, there will be a lot of expectations,” Gyan added.

The comments come as Ghana continues its preparations for a challenging World Cup campaign. The Black Stars have been drawn in Group L, where they will face Panama, England and Croatia in the opening phase of the tournament.

Despite the difficult nature of the group, Gyan believes Semenyo will be the player most capable of influencing Ghana’s fortunes.

The former captain went as far as suggesting that the country’s chances of success at the tournament could depend heavily on the attacker’s performances.

“He’s the face of Ghana football right now because of his position and what he has done for himself. Everything is going to depend on Antoine Semenyo for this World Cup.”

Those remarks underline the confidence Gyan has in the striker’s ability to perform on the international stage, while also highlighting the weight of expectation resting on his shoulders.

Ghana will begin its World Cup journey against Panama on 17 June in Toronto before taking on England and Croatia in the remaining Group L fixtures.

As the tournament approaches, Semenyo is expected to be one of the most closely watched members of the Black Stars squad, with supporters hoping he can translate his club form into success for Ghana and help lead the nation through a demanding group-stage campaign.
