Ghana unveil Carlos Queiroz as Black Stars head coach

Ghana national football team head coach Carlos Queiroz has been officially unveiled following his appointment to lead the team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup 2026.

The 73-year-old was introduced at a media ceremony held on Thursday at the Alisa Hotel in Accra. The event was attended by senior officials of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), including president Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, vice-president Mark Addo, Executive Council member and Black Stars Management Committee chairman Randy Abbey, as well as assistant coach Desmond Ofei.

Queiroz has signed a short-term, four-month contract, with his immediate task being to guide Ghana to the upcoming World Cup, which will be hosted across Canada, Mexico and the United States this summer.

The West African giants are drawn in Group L, where they will open their campaign against Panama on June 17 in Toronto, Canada, before facing heavyweight opponents England and Croatia.

His appointment comes after the departure of Otto Addo, with the GFA turning to the experienced Portuguese tactician at a crucial stage of the national team’s preparations. The short duration of the contract underlines the immediate focus on the World Cup campaign.

Queiroz arrives with a wealth of international experience and a strong World Cup pedigree. He previously guided South Africa  to qualification for the 2002 tournament, led Portugal to the knockout stages in 2010, and managed Iran national football team at both the 2014 and 2018 editions.

His extensive résumé also includes spells with national teams such as Egypt, Oman, Japan, and Qatar, as well as high-profile club roles with Real Madrid CF and Manchester United.

The unveiling event, though brief, highlighted the urgency surrounding Ghana’s preparations, with the technical team expected to begin work immediately ahead of the tournament.

Carlos Queiroz will be tasked with assembling a competitive squad and ensuring the team is ready to perform on the world stage.

With the World Cup fast approaching, attention will now turn to how quickly the new coach can implement his ideas and build momentum within the squad. His experience is expected to play a key role as Ghana aims to make an impact at the tournament.

The coming weeks will be crucial for the Black Stars as they look to refine their preparations under new leadership, with Queiroz’s appointment seen as a strategic move to strengthen the team’s prospects.
