Accra Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare has received a late call-up to Ghana’s squad for the upcoming international friendly against Mexico national football team after replacing goalkeeper Gidios Aseako.
The match is scheduled to take place on Friday, 22 May 2026, and forms part of Ghana’s preparations for future international assignments, including the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
Asare, who currently plays for Accra Hearts of Oak, has become Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper following a series of strong performances for both club and country. His latest inclusion is seen as another indication of the confidence the Black Stars technical team has in the experienced shot-stopper.
The goalkeeper has made 11 appearances for Ghana and is widely regarded as one of the more dependable figures in the national setup. Despite being drafted into the squad at short notice, Asare is expected to bring calmness, leadership and experience to the team ahead of the high-profile encounter.
His selection comes after Aseako was withdrawn from the squad before the friendly against Mexico. No further details were given regarding the change.
The Black Stars are using the fixture as part of their continued preparations for future international competitions, with the technical handlers expected to use the game to assess the squad against strong opposition.
Mexico are expected to provide a stern challenge for Ghana, with the North American side preparing for major tournaments on home soil in the coming years. The match is therefore viewed as an important test for the Black Stars as they continue building towards the next World Cup.
Asare’s growing influence within the national team has become increasingly evident in recent months. His performances have helped him cement his place as Ghana’s leading goalkeeper option, while his consistency has earned him continued trust from the coaching staff.
The late invitation is also another significant moment in the goalkeeper’s rise within Ghanaian football. Having established himself at Hearts of Oak, Asare has steadily become a key figure for the national side and is now expected to play an important role as Ghana continue preparations for the global tournament.
The friendly against Mexico is expected to offer Ghana’s technical team another opportunity to evaluate players, improve cohesion within the squad and test tactical approaches ahead of the World Cup campaign.
With the tournament set to be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico, the Black Stars are expected to intensify preparations in the coming months as they seek to compete strongly on the international stage.
