Ghana national under-17 football team have finished third in Group D at the 2026 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations after tournament officials used a drawing of lots to separate them from Algeria national under-17 football team following an unprecedented tie in the standings.
The two sides completed the group stage level on points, goals scored, goals conceded and head-to-head record, leaving organisers with no option but to determine the final positions by chance.
The outcome handed Algeria second place in the group, while Ghana’s Black Starlets were moved into third despite a series of determined displays during the competition in Morocco.
The Black Starlets had entered their final group fixture knowing victory was essential to maintain hopes of progressing automatically to the knockout stage. They responded with a strong performance, defeating South Africa national under-17 football team 3-1.
However, even that result was not enough to separate Ghana from Algeria in the standings.
With every major tiebreaking measure exhausted, officials resorted to the drawing of lots, a rare occurrence at a major international tournament, to determine which nation would advance as runners-up in the group.
The decision proved heartbreaking for Ghana, who had fought throughout the tournament to remain in contention for qualification.
Ghana will now face Uganda in a deciding fixture to determine who qualifiest to the World Cup.
Despite the setback, the former African champions are still in the race to reach the 2026 FIFA U-17 World Cup. Their third-place finish means they remain eligible for the playoff round, where the remaining qualification places for the global tournament will be decided.
The playoff fixtures are expected to feature all third-placed teams competing for the final World Cup spots, giving the Black Starlets another opportunity to extend their campaign.
Ghana’s performances in Morocco showed resilience, particularly in their final outing against South Africa, where the team delivered one of their strongest displays of the tournament. That victory briefly kept hopes alive before the extraordinary conclusion to the group standings was confirmed.
The Black Starlets’ focus will now turn fully towards the playoff stage, with the squad aiming to recover quickly from the disappointment of missing out on automatic progression.
Coaches and supporters alike will hope the team can use the frustration of the draw-of-lots decision as motivation in the next round of matches.
While Algeria celebrated securing second place and direct advancement from Group D, Ghana were left to reflect on how narrow the margins had become after an evenly balanced group campaign.
The Black Starlets nevertheless remain in contention for a place on the world stage, and their immediate objective is now clear: to win their playoff encounter and secure qualification for the FIFA U-17 World Cup.
