Ghana to extend Queiroz stay with AFCON 2027 in sight

Carlos Queiroz is expected to continue as Ghana head coach after reports indicating he will remain in charge beyond the expiry of his current contract, following the Black Stars‘ campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Portuguese coach, whose initial agreement runs until the end of the tournament, is poised to sign a new two-year contract after impressing the Ghana Football Association during his short spell at the helm of the national side.

The anticipated extension would end speculation surrounding the future of the 73-year-old, who had been linked with a departure after Ghana’s elimination in the Round of 32.

Earlier suggestions indicated Queiroz had opted to leave the role following the Black Stars’ exit from the World Cup. However, the former Portugal, Iran and Egypt manager is now expected to remain in charge as Ghana begins preparations for its next major international assignments.

Queiroz was appointed in March after the departure of Otto Addo, taking over on a short-term contract designed to cover the remainder of Ghana’s World Cup campaign. His future had been closely connected to the team’s performances at the tournament.

Under his leadership, Ghana reached the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time since 2010, marking a significant improvement after a challenging period for the national team.

The Black Stars’ tournament ended with a narrow defeat to Colombia in the Round of 32, but the overall campaign appears to have convinced the Ghana Football Association that Queiroz is the right person to continue leading the team.

During his four matches in charge, Ghana registered one victory, two draws and one defeat. Those results, combined with the team’s progress into the knockout rounds, helped restore belief within the squad following a difficult spell before his appointment.

The expected contract extension reflects the confidence the football association has developed in Queiroz’s leadership despite the team’s World Cup exit. His brief tenure has been viewed positively, with Ghana showing signs of renewed organisation and competitiveness on the international stage.

A new agreement would also provide greater continuity as the Black Stars begin planning for the next phase of their development under the experienced coach.

Queiroz brings extensive international experience to the position, having previously managed Portugal, Iran and Egypt before accepting the Ghana role earlier this year. His appointment came at a crucial stage, with limited time to prepare the team ahead of the World Cup.

Attention is now expected to turn towards the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which is set to become the principal objective should the new contract be finalised.

Ending Ghana’s lengthy wait for continental success is expected to be the immediate priority for Queiroz as he looks to build on the progress made during the World Cup campaign.

With the uncertainty over his future seemingly resolved, Ghana can now focus on long-term planning, with the Black Stars expected to continue under Queiroz’s guidance as preparations begin for the next Africa Cup of Nations.
