Ghana ends government World Cup ticket scheme after Group Stage

The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has confirmed that the government’s World Cup ticket support programme has come to an end after providing 2,922 tickets to Ghanaian supporters for the Black Stars‘ three group-stage matches.

The Ministry said the initiative enabled selected fans, recognised supporter groups, sponsors, stakeholders and members of the Ghanaian diaspora to attend Ghana’s opening three matches of the tournament. Tickets were distributed electronically through FIFA’s official ticketing platform.

The announcement comes as Ghana prepare for the knockout phase of the competition following their qualification for the Round of 32, where they will face Colombia.

However, the Ministry has made it clear that no further government-backed ticket arrangements will be available for the remainder of the tournament.

Supporters hoping to watch Ghana’s upcoming matches have instead been advised to secure their tickets independently through FIFA’s official ticketing platform or authorised ticket agencies.

The Ministry explained that the ticket support programme was limited to the Black Stars’ group-stage fixtures, during which a total of 2,922 tickets were allocated.

According to the Ministry, beneficiaries included selected supporters, officially recognised fan groups, sponsors, stakeholders and Ghanaians living abroad. Members of the Ghanaian diaspora received their allocations through the country’s diplomatic missions in the United States and Canada.

The Ministry said all tickets were issued electronically using FIFA’s official ticketing system, allowing recipients to access their match tickets digitally.

While the programme enabled thousands of supporters to attend Ghana’s group matches, the Ministry acknowledged that demand significantly exceeded the number of tickets available.

As a result, many fans who had hoped to benefit from the initiative were unable to obtain tickets.

With the Black Stars progressing beyond the group stage, attention has now shifted to Ghana’s Round of 32 encounter against Colombia. The Ministry stressed that supporters intending to travel to future matches will now need to make their own ticket arrangements.

It advised fans to purchase tickets only through FIFA’s official ticketing platform or authorised ticket agencies for the remainder of the competition.

The Ministry also announced that it will publish the complete list of beneficiaries who received tickets under the government support programme at a later date.

In its statement, the Ministry thanked Ghanaians for their continued backing of the national team and encouraged supporters to maintain their support as the Black Stars continue their World Cup campaign.

The end of the ticket support initiative marks the conclusion of the government’s involvement in providing match tickets during the tournament, with responsibility for securing seats for future fixtures now resting with individual supporters as Ghana prepare for the knockout stages.
