Dani Carvajal’s proposed move to Getafe remains possible this month, despite initial talks over a short-term contract breaking down.
The former Real Madrid captain is seeking an agreement that would allow him to leave in January if he receives an attractive offer, while Getafe are also concerned about whether they can afford his wages, even with the defender prepared to accept a reduced salary.
Getafe president Angel Torres had appeared to end negotiations, saying: “Everything has fallen apart, there’s nothing left.” However, his position has since softened, leaving open the possibility of a deal until the end of the campaign.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Getafe have already reached their salary cap for 2026/27. The club’s financial limits, combined with Carvajal’s reported demand for an exit clause, have become the main obstacles to an agreement.
Carvajal decided to bring his Real Madrid career to an end after the 2025/26 season, despite being offered a one-year contract extension. The decision followed Real Madrid’s policy for players aged 30 and over.
The 34-year-old came through the youth system at Los Blancos before spending a season with Bayer Leverkusen. He returned to Madrid in 2013 and went on to become one of the club’s most decorated players.
During his time with Real Madrid, Carvajal won four LaLiga titles and six UEFA Champions League titles. He was part of several highly successful teams and established himself as a club legend, as well as one of the world’s leading full-backs over the past decade.
Carvajal has attracted offers from MLS, the Saudi Pro League and the Qatar Stars League. His preference, however, has been to remain in Spain for family reasons.
That desire had made Getafe the leading option, with discussions initially moving in a positive direction before the financial and contractual disagreements emerged. A deal is therefore still not ruled out, but the club must resolve its salary-cap position and determine whether it can accept the possibility of Carvajal departing midway through the season.
