German-born Togolese defender Omar Traoré on verge of Watford switch

Watford are closing in on the signing of German-born right-back Omar Traoré, who is of Togolese descent, as the club prepare to begin their summer recruitment drive with a focus on defensive reinforcements.

The 28-year-old became a free agent after the expiry of his contract at FC Heidenheim in Germany and is now expected to complete a move to the English club.

Traoré will become Watford’s first signing of the transfer window as the Hornets look to reshape their squad ahead of the new season.

Traoré’s arrival is expected to be part of a multi-club strategy within the group, with Watford identified as his next destination after his departure from Germany.

The move would see him strengthen a squad that is currently undergoing changes under new head coach Alessio Dionisi.

Watford begin the upcoming campaign under yet another managerial change, with Dionisi tasked with rebuilding a side that has yet to make any new signings so far this summer.

The expected arrival of Traoré is therefore likely to be viewed as an important early step in shaping the squad ahead of a competitive season.

Traoré brings experience from German football, having developed through the youth system at VfL Osnabrück before establishing himself in senior football.

He broke into the first team in 2021 and went on to become a consistent presence across Germany’s lower divisions.

During his time at Osnabrück, he made 69 league appearances, scoring five goals and registering eight assists.

His performances across both the 3. Liga and later the 2. Bundesliga helped him earn recognition as a dependable and energetic full-back before leaving the club in 2023 at the end of his contract.

Known for his attacking contribution from the right flank as well as his defensive discipline, Traoré is seen as a versatile option who can contribute in both phases of play.

His availability on a free transfer made him an attractive option for clubs looking to strengthen without heavy expenditure.

Born in Germany and of Togolese heritage, Traoré also adds an African connection to Watford’s squad profile, a factor that will be welcomed by supporters following players with diverse international backgrounds.
