Gambian defender Abubacarr Sedi Kinteh has completed a move to Al Ahli, with the Saudi club confirming the signing of the highly-rated youngster on a five-year contract from Norwegian side Tromsø IL.
The transfer marks a significant step in the career of the Gambia international, who leaves European football to join one of Saudi Arabia’s leading clubs as they strengthen their squad for upcoming domestic and continental campaigns.
Al Ahli announced the arrival of Kinteh after days of speculation surrounding his future, with the player having already completed a medical examination before the deal was finalised.
The Saudi club believes the defender can make an important contribution to its ambitions over the coming years, citing his defensive qualities, versatility and long-term potential.
In a statement welcoming the player, Al Ahli described the signing as a major addition to its defensive options and expressed confidence that he can help the club achieve its objectives in the seasons ahead.
For Gambian football, the move represents another milestone for a player who has steadily built a reputation as one of the country’s most promising defenders.
Kinteh impressed during his time with Tromsø, where his performances attracted attention beyond Norway. Although his playing opportunities were limited this season, he still featured in 11 matches across all competitions and accumulated 755 minutes of action.
His development has been closely monitored, and the transfer to Saudi Arabia underlines the growing demand for young African talent across different football markets.
The deal was welcomed by the player’s agent, Cherno Samba, who highlighted the complexity involved in securing a transfer of this scale.
“This kind of agreement isn’t easily concluded. It requires experience, contacts, and above all, exceptional work to achieve it. Sometimes it seems like it happens by itself, but that’s not the case. It demands time and precision, so you need to know what you’re doing to close a deal of this magnitude, but I’m happy for him.”
Samba also revealed that remaining in Europe had initially been considered, but ultimately felt the opportunity presented by Al Ahli was too significant to ignore.
“He deserves it. This is a life-changing opportunity that will secure his legacy for generations to come. That’s why I made this decision, because opportunities like this only come once, especially in this sector for young talent with short careers. Sometimes, these kinds of opportunities are truly unique.”
The agent further explained the reasoning behind the move, stressing the long-term benefits it could provide for the player and his family.
“So we chose Europe, but there was no way I was going to let her refuse. It’s an inheritance for several generations, and it’s something that will ensure the financial security of her entire family, including future generations.”
Valued at €7 million on the transfer market, Kinteh now enters a new chapter in his career at a club that has shown considerable faith in his potential by offering a contract running for five years.
