From Libya to Luanda: Cissé poised for Angola takeover

Rapid transition signals imminent appointment

Reports from Angola indicate that Senegalese coach Aliou Cissé is on the verge of being named the new head coach of the Angolan national team, just hours after stepping down from his role with Libya.

Cissé announced his departure from the Libyan national team on Wednesday, ending a tenure that had begun in March 2025. Within the same day, Angolan media suggested that he had already travelled to the country in preparation for his next position.

Angola’s national radio has reported that the Angolan Football Federation will formally unveil its new head coach during a press conference scheduled for Thursday evening. Local outlet Radio Sinco further stated that Cissé arrived in Angola on Wednesday night, signalling that the appointment may be imminent.

Vacancy filled after Beaumelle exit

The Angolan national team has been without a head coach since mid-February, following the departure of Patrice Beaumelle, who left to take charge of Esperance of Tunisia. The prolonged vacancy appears set to end with Cissé’s expected appointment.

Cissé’s departure from Libya came despite his contract reportedly running until 2027. According to Libyan reports, delays in salary payments over several months may have contributed to his decision to leave the role earlier than planned.

Emotional farewell to Libya

In a message shared via his personal Instagram account, Cissé reflected on his time with the Libyan national team, expressing both gratitude and pride in what had been achieved.

“Last March was an exceptional month for me, as it witnessed my last gathering as coach of the Libyan national team.”

“It has been a very enriching adventure, both professionally and personally, and I couldn’t leave without saying a word from the heart.”

He paid tribute to his players and staff, acknowledging the challenges they faced together.

“To the technical staff and players: Despite the difficulties we faced, I am proud of the work we accomplished together and the results we achieved.”

“I have great faith in this team, and I have no doubt that you will continue your efforts to move it forward.”

Cissé also addressed Libyan supporters directly, thanking them for their backing throughout his tenure.

“I would like to thank you for the warm welcome you have given me, and for your enthusiasm and unlimited support.”

“I will never forget you, and I know that the Knights of the Mediterranean will always be able to rely on you. I wish you all the best in the future.”

A swift new chapter begins

Cissé’s expected move to Angola marks a rapid transition between roles, underlining both the demand for his experience and the urgency within the Angolan setup to secure leadership ahead of upcoming fixtures. His arrival could signal a new phase for the national team as it seeks stability following months without a permanent coach.
