Franco Mastantuono says his loan move from Real Madrid to Fiorentina has “changed my life”, in comments that appeared to underline the difference between his difficult spell in Spain and his improved form in Italy.
The 19-year-old Argentina international joined Fiorentina on loan from Real Madrid last summer after a challenging period in the Spanish capital. Since arriving in Florence, Mastantuono has recovered the form that established him as one of South America’s leading young talents.
He spoke after Argentina’s victory over Bolivia, with his comments reported by Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo. Speaking to reporters in the mixed zone, Mastantuono made clear how much he has enjoyed the change in surroundings.
“I have felt great since I went to Italy and it changed my life a little,” he said. “I feel very comfortable and have enjoyed it a lot.”
He added: “Changing the environment was great for me.”
The remarks appeared to point to the contrast between the pressure he experienced at Real Madrid and the greater stability he has found in Italy. Mastantuono remains under contract with Real Madrid despite his temporary move to Fiorentina.
The forward also thanked Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni for the trust he has shown him while on international duty.
“Scaloni gives me a lot of freedom to play, and I am grateful for that,” Mastantuono said.
His comments reflected the confidence he has regained with the Argentina national team, although he also spoke about the disappointment of being left out of the country’s squad for the most recent World Cup.
“It is difficult not to be called up, but I have always supported my team-mates and Argentina to do their best,” he said. “They performed amazingly at the World Cup and made all Argentines proud.”
Mastantuono ended with an optimistic assessment of what lies ahead, while stressing that his immediate priority is continuing to work with the national team.
“A new stage is beginning,” he said. “I feel good, and I may have an opportunity, but above all, I want to work with the national team.”
