Former Orlando Pirates coach Josef Zinnbauer has taken on a new challenge in African football after being appointed head coach of Sudanese giants Al Hilal.
The German tactician has signed a two-year contract with the Sudanese champions and returns to management after continuing his coaching journey across the continent.
Zinnbauer made his name in South Africa with Orlando Pirates, where he guided the Buccaneers to the MTN8 title before leaving the club in 2021.

Al Hilal confirmed the appointment in a statement welcoming the German to the club.
“We are proud to announce the appointment of German coach Josef Zinnbauer as the new head coach of the King of Sudanese Football, on a two-year contract.”
The club added:
“A new chapter begins. A new vision. A new challenge. Welcome to Al Hilal family, Coach Zinnbauer.”
Al Hilal also expressed confidence in Zinnbauer’s experience and leadership as the club prepares for the new season.
“We believe in your experience, ambition, and leadership, and we look forward to achieving great things together. The journey starts now. Let’s make history.”
Champions League challenge awaits
Zinnbauer will have little time to settle into his new role, with Al Hilal preparing for their CAF Champions League campaign.
The Sudanese giants have been drawn against Burundi’s Aigle Noir Makamba in the preliminary round, giving the new coach an immediate opportunity to make his mark in African club competition.
Al Hilal will be hoping Zinnbauer’s previous experience of African football can help the club navigate the Champions League and compete strongly on both the domestic and continental fronts.
For the German coach, the appointment provides another opportunity to build on his reputation as he begins a new chapter with one of Sudan’s biggest clubs.
