Former Willard Katsande has stepped down from his role as head coach of Rangers FC, bringing an early end to his first significant coaching appointment in Zimbabwe.
The 40-year-old, best known for his long association with Kaizer Chiefs, confirmed his departure via social media, although he did not disclose the reasons behind his decision.
Katsande had only taken charge of the Chinhoyi-based side in March, marking what was seen as a new chapter in his career following his retirement from professional football. His appointment raised expectations that he could guide Rangers FC to a successful campaign in the Northern Region Division One League.
However, his tenure lasted just a matter of weeks.
In a brief message posted online, Katsande acknowledged the players and the club, writing: “Great group of players,” he said on X.
“Thank you FC Rangers for the opportunity.”
No further details have been provided regarding the circumstances of his departure, leaving uncertainty about the future direction of both the coach and the club.
Katsande’s move into coaching had been closely followed, given his reputation as a commanding presence during his playing days. Nicknamed ‘Salt & Vinegar’ for his uncompromising style in midfield, he enjoyed a decade-long spell with Kaizer Chiefs after joining the club from the now-defunct Ajax Cape Town in 2011.
During his time with the Johannesburg-based side, Katsande made 346 appearances across all competitions. He scored 19 goals and contributed 10 assists, establishing himself as a key figure in the team’s midfield.
His leadership qualities also saw him captain the club, helping guide them to domestic success, including two league titles and the MTN8 trophy.
After leaving Kaizer Chiefs in 2021, Katsande briefly continued his playing career with Sekhukhune United in 2022. He soon retired from professional football, paving the way for his transition into coaching.
His appointment at Rangers FC was viewed as an opportunity to bring his experience and leadership to a developing side in Zimbabwe’s lower divisions. The club had hoped his presence would strengthen their bid for promotion and provide guidance to a relatively young squad.
Despite the optimism surrounding his arrival, his sudden exit means Rangers FC must now regroup as they continue their campaign without the former international at the helm.
For Katsande, questions remain about his next move in football, and whether he will seek another coaching opportunity in the near future.
