Ivory Coast head coach Emerse Faé has set ambitious targets for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting his side will approach the tournament with belief and a fearless attacking mindset.
The Elephants have been drawn in Group E, where they will face Germany, Ecuador and Curaçao.
Despite the presence of strong opposition, Faé has made it clear that his team will not adopt a defensive approach.
With the competition, set to be co-hosted by United States, Canada and Mexico, fast approaching, Faé says his team is aiming to go as far as possible, including a potential run to the final.
“I believe Ivory Coast has the potential to achieve something exceptional. We will approach the competition with the ambition to win every match, taking it one game at a time, and going as far as possible. Why not aim for the final?” he said.
“I don’t want the team to sit back and play too cautiously. That’s not my philosophy. I’m not afraid of any opponent, including Germany.
“I want us to play with confidence, to go forward and try to score, rather than just defend and rely on counter-attacks.”
The 42-year-old coach, who earned 41 caps during his playing career with Ivory Coast, emphasised that the team will treat the tournament with the utmost seriousness, balancing ambition with discipline.
Before thinking about a deep run in the competition, Ivory Coast must first navigate a challenging group stage.
The upcoming World Cup represents an opportunity for redemption following a disappointing campaign at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Entering that tournament as defending champions and among the favourites, Ivory Coast were eliminated in the quarter-finals after a 3-2 defeat to Egypt.
That setback remains fresh, and Faé’s comments suggest a desire to respond with a stronger showing on the global stage.
For African audiences, Ivory Coast’s ambitions reflect a broader trend of confidence among the continent’s top teams heading into major international competitions.
With a blend of experience and attacking intent, the Elephants are positioning themselves as a side capable of challenging more established footballing nations.
As the countdown to the tournament continues, Ivory Coast’s preparations will focus on translating that ambition into performance.
The group stage will provide the first test of their credentials.
