Facundo Medina has rejected rumours surrounding Argentina’s defeat by Spain in the 2026 World Cup final, saying his team entered the match determined to win and that the speculation had even reached his mother.
The Argentina defender, who plays for French club Olympique de Marseille, spoke to Argentine broadcaster TyC Sports about the claims circulating on social media. He said the rumours had spread so widely that they reached people close to him, forcing him to discuss the subject with his mother and reassure her that the allegations were untrue.
Medina made clear that Argentina had no lack of motivation before the final and dismissed suggestions that the players had not wanted to lift the World Cup.
“Would you believe this too? Come on, why do you think we would have gone on to the pitch without wanting to win? We wanted to win like any other team in the world,” said the 25-year-old.
He added: “I would have been the first to celebrate if we had won that final. But unfortunately we lost, and we have to accept it and move on, even though it is difficult.”
Argentina suffered a painful defeat by Spain in the final, but Medina said the result did not reflect any lack of commitment from the squad. Instead, he pointed to the unity within the group and the personal qualities of his team-mates as central to the national side’s strength.
The defender said the close relationships among the players remained one of Argentina’s most important assets. He believes that solidarity can provide the foundation for the team to recover and challenge again in the future.
Although he acknowledged how difficult the final loss had been to accept, Medina insisted it would not damage Argentina’s competitive spirit. The squad, he said, would continue working hard in an effort to restore the team to the top.
