Former Uruguay international Gustavo Poyet has emerged as a strong contender for the vacant Black Stars head coach position after his representatives submitted his application before the deadline, African.football can exclusively reveal.
Poyet has managed several clubs across Europe, including Brighton & Hove Albion, Sunderland, Real Betis, AEK Athens and Bordeaux.
He has also coached the Greece national team and South Korea’s Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors.
The Uruguayan guided Jeonbuk to the 2025 K League 1 title and Korean FA Cup, adding to his experience in both club and international football.
Ghana are searching for a new head coach as they look to restore consistency and improve performances following the vacancy in the Black Stars dugout.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has appointed an interim technical team led by Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren to oversee the team’s next two qualifying matches while the search for a permanent successor continues.
The search committee, chaired by Fred Pappoe, is expected to assess the applications received and recommend a candidate for the position.
Poyet’s experience across different leagues and his record in South Korea could strengthen his case as the GFA considers its options for the Black Stars job.
However, the decision will rest with the association as it seeks to appoint a permanent head coach to lead Ghana into the next phase of its international football campaign.
