Ex-Nigeria goalkeeper Greg Etafia leaves South Africa for Tanzanian champions

Former Nigeria international goalkeeper Greg Etafia has taken the next step in his coaching career after joining Tanzanian champions Young Africans as the club’s new goalkeeping coach.

The 43-year-old leaves South African Premier Soccer League side TS Galaxy after a successful five-year spell to become part of the technical team at one of East Africa’s most successful clubs.

Etafia’s appointment comes as Young Africans continue reshaping their coaching staff under newly appointed head coach Manqoba Mngqithi, who recently assumed control following his departure from South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns.

The move also highlights the continued demand for African coaching expertise across the continent, with former international players increasingly taking on influential technical roles after their playing careers.

Young Africans are rebuilding their technical department ahead of the new campaign, and the arrival of Etafia is regarded as an important addition to that process.

The former Super Eagles goalkeeper will now be responsible for developing and preparing the club’s goalkeepers as they compete domestically and in continental competitions.

His appointment follows five years with TS Galaxy, where he established himself as one of the respected goalkeeping coaches in South African football.

Having successfully transitioned from player to coach, Etafia has earned recognition for his work in developing goalkeepers and strengthening defensive departments.

His experience in the South African Premier Soccer League is expected to prove valuable as Young Africans seek to maintain their dominance in Tanzania while remaining competitive on the continental stage.

The Tanzanian champions recently appointed Manqoba Mngqithi as head coach after his departure from Mamelodi Sundowns.

The experienced South African tactician has already begun assembling his preferred backroom staff, with Etafia becoming one of the latest additions to the technical team.

The changes underline Young Africans’ ambition to strengthen every aspect of the club ahead of the new season.

For Etafia, the appointment represents another significant milestone in a coaching journey that has steadily gathered momentum since he retired from professional football.

Rather than moving away from the game after ending his playing career, the former Nigeria international chose to remain involved by focusing on goalkeeper development.

That decision has now earned him an opportunity with one of Africa’s biggest clubs.
