Emiliano Martinez has admitted he is questioning his international future after Argentina’s agonising defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final, describing the pain as “hard to explain” in an emotional message to supporters.
The Aston Villa goalkeeper, who was a hero in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph, broke his silence on Instagram after La Albiceleste lost 1-0 in extra time, with Ferran Torres scoring the decisive goal for Spain.
Spain’s victory in the United States denied Argentina back-to-back World Cup titles and a historic fourth crown overall.
‘I dreamed we’d won it again’
In a short but poignant post, Martinez revealed how deeply the loss has affected him and how much he had envisaged repeating Argentina’s 2022 success.
He wrote on Instagram: “حلمت باننا فزنا بها مجددا، حلمت باخذها الى الارجنتين وصناعة التاريخ مرة اخرى”.
Translated, Martinez said he had “dreamed that we had won it again” and “dreamed of taking it to Argentina and making history again,” underlining the weight of expectation and desire within the squad to retain the trophy.
The 33-year-old has been a central figure in Argentina’s recent golden era, noted for his penalty-saving heroics and outspoken personality. His latest remarks, however, struck a more vulnerable and reflective tone.
‘Hard to explain this pain’
Martinez went on to say that the defeat had left him struggling to process his emotions and considering his future with the national team.
He added: “في الحقيقة، من الصعب شرح هذا الالم، ويبقى فقط التفكير بتمعن في العديد من الامور وروية كيف يمكن المضي قدما، وما اذا كان الوقت قد حان للتنحي جانبا. انا اسف حقا، لقد حاولت جاهدا تقديم اقصى ما لدي لمساعدة بلدي وزملايي”.
In English, that statement conveys that “it is difficult to explain this pain” and that he feels only deep reflection remains – to think carefully about “how to move forward” and “whether it is time to step aside”. He also apologised to fans, saying he had tried “really hard” to give everything to help his country and his team-mates.
Those words will be interpreted by many in Argentina as a sign that Martinez is weighing up retirement from international football after the narrow loss.
Spain crowned, Argentina left to reflect
The final, decided by Ferran Torres’s goal in extra time, saw Spain crowned world champions once more and ended Argentina’s bid to emulate sides that have successfully defended the World Cup.
