Ejuke and Adams face uncertainty as Sevilla dismiss head coach

Sevilla FC have dismissed head coach Matías Almeyda following a series of poor results that have left the club hovering above the relegation zone in La Liga.

The decision comes after a disappointing campaign in which Sevilla have struggled to distance themselves from danger. Nigerian internationals Chidera Ejuke and Akor Adams are among the players now set to operate under new leadership as the club attempts to stabilise its season.

Almeyda had only taken charge last summer, arriving at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán following the departure of García Pimienta. He was tasked with guiding the team to a more successful season after they finished 17th in the previous campaign, narrowly avoiding relegation.

However, results have failed to improve significantly under his management. After 29 matches in Spain’s top flight, Sevilla currently sit 15th in the table, just three points above the relegation places. The situation has left the club facing a genuine risk of dropping into the second tier if form does not improve.

The final setback came with a 2-0 defeat at home to Valencia CF, a side also battling near the bottom of the table. The loss marked Sevilla’s 14th of the league season, meaning they have been beaten in nearly half of their matches so far.

That result appears to have prompted decisive action from the club’s hierarchy. Shortly after the defeat, Sevilla confirmed Almeyda’s departure in an official statement.

”Matías Almeyda has been relieved of his duties as Sevilla FC first-team head coach,” the club confirmed.

”The Argentine coach leaves the club after 32 official matches—29 in La Liga and three in the Copa del Rey—following his arrival last June. Sevilla FC wish to thank Matías Almeyda and his staff for their efforts and professionalism, and we wish him the best for the future.”

The announcement brings an end to a tenure lasting less than a full season, underlining the urgency of Sevilla’s situation as they seek to avoid relegation. With only a narrow cushion separating them from the drop zone, the club now faces a critical period in the remainder of the campaign.

Attention will turn to who will replace Almeyda and whether a change in leadership can spark an upturn in performances. For players such as Ejuke and Adams, the managerial shift presents both uncertainty and opportunity as they look to secure their roles within the squad.
