Egypt youth team targets top opponents in final preparations

The head coach of Egypt’s youth national team, Hussein Abdel Latif, has requested additional high-level preparation matches as the side intensifies its build-up to the upcoming Africa U-17 Cup of Nations in Morocco.

According to a source within the Egyptian Football Association, the coaching staff has formally asked for two friendly fixtures against strong opponents. The move is aimed at sharpening both the technical and physical readiness of the squad ahead of the continental competition.

Focus on Competitive Readiness

The request reflects growing awareness within the camp of the challenges awaiting the team. The Africa U-17 Cup of Nations is expected to feature some of the continent’s strongest youth sides, placing a premium on thorough preparation.

By facing top-tier opposition in friendly matches, the coaching staff hopes to simulate the intensity and tactical demands of tournament football. The objective is to ensure players are fully prepared for the level of competition they will encounter.

Qualification Secured After North African Campaign

Egypt secured its place in the finals after finishing third in the North African qualifiers held in Libya. That result ensured qualification among the 16 teams set to compete in the tournament.

The competition is scheduled to begin on 13 May 2026, with teams divided into four groups of four.

Tournament Structure Raises Stakes

The format of the tournament increases the importance of early performances. The top two teams from each group will progress to the quarter-finals, while also securing direct qualification for the Under-17 World Cup.

In addition, two more World Cup places will be decided through play-off matches involving the third-placed teams from each group.

This structure places significant pressure on teams to perform consistently throughout the group stage.

Challenging Group Awaits Egypt

Egypt have been drawn into a difficult group alongside host nation Morocco, as well as Tunisia and Ethiopia.

Facing the host nation often presents additional challenges, including home support and familiarity with conditions. Tunisia also brings strong regional rivalry, while Ethiopia adds further unpredictability to the group.

Preparation Seen as Key to Progress

Given the level of opposition, the emphasis on preparation has become central to the team’s approach. The proposed friendly matches are viewed as an opportunity to refine tactics, build cohesion, and assess player readiness under competitive conditions.

The coaching staff believes that entering the tournament with sufficient match sharpness could prove decisive in navigating a demanding group stage.

Building Towards a Global Opportunity

Beyond continental success, the tournament carries the added incentive of qualification for the Under-17 World Cup. For many players, it represents a potential pathway to international recognition and future professional opportunities.

As preparations continue, the focus remains on ensuring the team is equipped to meet the challenges ahead. Abdel Latif’s request for stronger opposition underlines a clear intention: to arrive in Morocco fully prepared for one of the most competitive youth tournaments in African football.
