Denzel Dumfries says joining Real Madrid fulfils a lifelong ambition and insists he is ready for the responsibility that comes with playing for one of football’s biggest clubs.
The 30-year-old Netherlands international was formally presented as a new Real Madrid player on Tuesday, 47 days after the club issued an official statement confirming that his transfer had been completed. The ceremony took place alongside club president Florentino Perez.
According to Spanish newspaper AS, Dumfries attended the presentation with the club’s honorary president, Pirri, as well as members of his family. He watched a video featuring highlights from his career before receiving gifts from Perez and signing his contract.
The former Inter Milan player has committed his future to Real Madrid until 2030.
Speaking to the club’s media channels, Dumfries said: “For anyone, playing for Real Madrid is a dream. Being here represents a great responsibility, of course, because we have important goals. I am very proud and very happy. I am ready to start.”
Dumfries joined Real Madrid training on 28 July and made his first appearance for the club in their opening pre-season friendly against Fiorentina. That match ended in a 2-2 draw.
His arrival strengthens Real Madrid’s options at right-back following the departure of Dani Carvajal. The club have brought in a player with extensive experience and the stature to take on responsibility on the right side of the defence.
Dumfries will compete with Trent Alexander-Arnold for the position, giving Real Madrid two established options in the role. Manager Mourinho has already tested the pair together on two occasions during pre-season.
During his time with Inter Milan, Dumfries played 207 matches, scoring 27 goals and providing 28 assists. His most memorable performance in Italy came in the semi-final of the 2024-25 Champions League against Barcelona, when he scored twice and created three goals.
Across his five seasons with Inter Milan, Dumfries developed into one of the world’s leading players in his position. He now arrives at the Santiago Bernabeu with the task of helping fill the gap left by a club legend such as Carvajal.
The Dutchman will work under a manager who appears particularly well suited to his style of play. His pace, attacking threat and experience are expected to be important as he begins his new chapter in Spain.
Dumfries’ first competitive appearance for Real Madrid is scheduled for Saturday, when the club travel to face Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium. The match will provide his first opportunity to play for the club in an official fixture after his formal unveiling.
