DR Congo steps up security ahead of Sierra Leone AFCON qualifier

Football authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo are preparing enhanced security measures for the national team’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sierra Leone and matches in the country’s domestic leagues.

The Congolese Football Federation (FECOFA) is scheduled to hold a security planning meeting at its headquarters on Thursday, 29 October 2026, at 15:00 local time, to discuss arrangements for upcoming fixtures.

A key focus will be the third matchday of the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign, when DR Congo are due to face Sierra Leone at the Martyrs Stadium on 12 November. The match is scheduled to kick off at 17:00.

The meeting is intended to address organisational and security requirements for the international fixture, which is expected to attract considerable interest among Congolese football supporters.

However, the discussions will not be limited to the national team.

FECOFA will also consider arrangements for matches in the country’s Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 competitions, reflecting a wider effort to improve safety across domestic football.

The federation’s plans are aimed at ensuring that matches are hosted in an orderly manner, with security arrangements meeting the standards required for the smooth running of competitions.

By bringing international and domestic fixtures into the same discussions, the governing body is seeking to strengthen the management of football events at different levels of the national game.

The meeting comes as preparations continue for DR Congo’s November encounter with Sierra Leone, one of the fixtures in the country’s pursuit of qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Martyrs Stadium in Kinshasa will host the match, with the scheduled 17:00 kick-off forming part of the arrangements that organisers must consider when planning security and matchday operations.

For the federation, effective planning is important not only for major international fixtures but also for the regular programme of domestic league matches.

Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 provide the setting for football across the country’s national championship structure, and FECOFA’s attention to their organisation indicates that security concerns extend beyond matches involving the national side.

The discussions are expected to cover the measures needed to ensure that games proceed safely and without unnecessary disruption.

The federation has identified rigorous oversight as an important part of maintaining the smooth operation of the sporting season.

The initiative reflects the authorities’ stated commitment to protecting the safety of those involved in football competitions across the country. This includes ensuring that international matches and domestic league fixtures are organised under appropriate conditions.

While the meeting is taking place ahead of the DR Congo-Sierra Leone qualifier, its scope gives it wider significance for the management of Congolese football.

The outcome of the discussions will help shape preparations for the upcoming fixtures, with the federation seeking to establish the conditions needed for matches to take place in a safe and organised environment.
