DR Congo name world cup squad featuring European-based stars

DR Congo national football team coach Sébastien Desabre has announced his squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with striker Fiston Mayele among the notable selections.

The Congolese side will compete in Group I alongside Portugal national football team, Colombia national football team and Uzbekistan national football team as they prepare for their return to football’s biggest stage.

DR Congo secured qualification for the tournament after defeating Jamaica national football team 1-0 in the World Cup qualifying play-off.

Much of the attention surrounding the squad announcement focused on Mayele, whose performances for Pyramids FC earned him a place in Desabre’s final selection.

The forward has enjoyed an impressive season with the Egyptian club, helping Pyramids win the Egyptian Cup while establishing himself as one of the team’s key attacking players.

Mayele featured in 42 matches across all competitions during the campaign, scoring 14 goals and providing two assists.

His inclusion strengthens a DR Congo attack that already contains several experienced international players competing across Europe and the Middle East.

Among the most recognisable names in defence is Aaron Wan-Bissaka of West Ham United FC, alongside Chancel Mbemba, currently with Lille OSC, and Axel Tuanzebe of Burnley FC.

The defensive group also includes Arthur Masuaku, Joris Kayembe and Rocky Bushiri as Desabre attempts to build a balanced squad capable of competing against strong opposition in the group stage.

In midfield, DR Congo will rely on players such as Samuel Moutoussamy, Grady Diangana and Edu Kayembe.

The attacking department contains significant experience and depth, led by veteran striker Cedric Bakambu of Real Betis and Yoane Wissa, who currently plays for Newcastle United.

Other attacking options include Theo Bongonda, Simon Banza, Nathaniel M’Poku and Meshack Elia.

The squad announced by Desabre reflects a combination of experienced internationals and players who have impressed during the recent club season.

DR Congo will hope that blend of European-based talent and in-form attackers can help the team challenge in a difficult World Cup group featuring Portugal and Colombia.

The tournament also represents another opportunity for the Congolese national side to re-establish itself on the global stage after securing qualification through the play-offs.

With Mayele arriving in strong form and several players competing at top European clubs, expectations among supporters are likely to rise ahead of the competition.

Desabre’s side now turns its attention to preparations for the tournament as DR Congo seek to make an impact against some of world football’s strongest nations.
