A well-known supporter of the DR Congo national football team has been honoured by the country’s leadership following the Leopards’ historic qualification for the 2026 World Cup.
Congolese entertainer Lumumba Vea, widely recognised for his passionate support of the national side, received a Toyota Land Cruiser from President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo on Monday, 13 April 2026.
The gesture comes as part of broader celebrations marking the country’s return to football’s biggest stage.
The recognition highlights the role played not only by players and officials but also by supporters in driving national enthusiasm during the qualification campaign.
Lumumba Vea, whose real name is Michel Kuka Mboladinga, has become a prominent figure among fans due to his energetic displays and symbolic performances during matches.
Speaking after receiving the gift, he expressed his appreciation for the honour, describing it as a significant moment in his life.
He noted that being recognised by the presidency was a source of immense pride.
His latest reward comes just two months after he was presented with a jeep by the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Didier Budimbu.
That earlier recognition followed his high-profile support during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where he gained attention for portraying independence hero Patrice Lumumba during matches.
The government’s gesture towards Lumumba Vea forms part of a wider package of rewards for the national team and those associated with its success.
Following the Leopards’ qualification, President Tshisekedi awarded players and staff a range of incentives, including plots of land, vehicles and financial bonuses.
During an official ceremony held on 5 April at the African Union City complex in Kinshasa, members of the squad were celebrated for their achievement.
Head coach Sébastien Desabre and team captain Chancel Mbemba were among those who received high-value vehicles, including Toyota Land Cruiser 300 VXR models.
The celebrations followed a large public gathering at the esplanade of the People’s Palace, where thousands of supporters came together to mark the team’s success. The event reflected the scale of national pride surrounding the Leopards’ qualification.
For many in DR Congo, the World Cup qualification represents more than a sporting achievement.
It has become a symbol of unity and collective identity, with supporters playing a central role in creating the atmosphere that accompanied the team’s journey.
Lumumba Vea’s recognition underscores this connection between fans and the national team. His visibility and dedication have made him a symbol of the passion that surrounds football in the country.
As DR Congo prepares for the World Cup, attention will gradually shift back to the team’s performance on the global stage.
However, the honours handed out in the aftermath of qualification—including that of Lumumba Vea—serve as a reminder of the collective effort behind the achievement.
