Darlin Yongwa linked with Malaga move as free-agent Cameroon defender weighs next step

Cameroon left-back Darlin Yongwa, currently without a club after leaving FC Lorient, is being linked with a move to Malaga CF as the Spanish side survey defensive options ahead of the new La Liga campaign.

Yongwa, 25, became a free agent on 1 July following the end of his spell at Lorient, making him an immediately attainable target for Malaga, who would not need to negotiate a transfer fee. The defender is valued at around €5m as of June, a figure that underlines the calibre of player potentially available on a free transfer.

The Douala-born full-back has built his reputation in France, amassing close to 60 Ligue 1 appearances for Lorient after stepping up from Chamois Niort, where he played regularly in Ligue 2. His top-flight record includes two goals and three assists, following a consistent run of almost 100 league games in the French second tier.

Yongwa was part of the Lorient squad that secured the French second-tier title in the 2024-25 season, a campaign that strengthened his standing on the European market and highlighted his ability to contribute over a long season.

Having first arrived in France with Niort’s reserve side before earning promotion to the senior team and later securing a move to Lorient in 2022, Yongwa now faces a pivotal decision over his next club at a relatively early stage of his career.

For now, the left-back remains unattached and free to negotiate, with Malaga monitoring his situation as they consider whether to formalise their interest.
