Inter Milan have confirmed the signing of England midfielder Curtis Jones from Liverpool in a deal worth £30m (€35m).
Sky Sports News understands the agreement also includes a 10% sell-on clause.
Jones, 25, was entering the final year of his Liverpool contract and his transfer to Italy brings to an end an 16-year association with the club. He joined Liverpool’s academy at the age of nine and progressed through the youth system before establishing himself in the first team.
The midfielder made his senior debut during the 2018-19 season and went on to play 228 times for Liverpool, scoring 22 goals.
His departure makes Jones the latest England international to join Inter in this transfer window. He follows John Stones and Djed Spence, who have also moved to Cristian Chivu’s side.
Jones leaves Anfield with a collection of major honours. During his Liverpool career, he won two Premier League titles, two Carabao Cups, the FIFA Club World Cup and the FA Cup. He was also part of the Liverpool team that finished as Champions League runners-up in 2022.
His move means Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola must now consider how to reshape his midfield.
Jones made 49 appearances under former head coach Arne Slot, including 34 during the club’s unsuccessful Premier League title defence. He was regularly involved alongside Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch, while also being used on occasions as an emergency right-back.
The new Liverpool manager has indicated that Florian Wirtz will operate in his preferred No 10 role in a 4-2-3-1 system. That would leave Szoboszlai, Mac Allister and Gravenberch competing for two midfield positions in front of the defence.
Liverpool can also call upon Wataru Endo and Trey Nyoni, who has impressed during pre-season. However, the club could still choose to reinvest the £30m received for Jones in a replacement.
Jones’s move represents a significant change for both player and club. For Liverpool, it ends the first-team career of a player who spent almost his entire football life at Anfield. For Inter, it adds another England international to a squad managed by Chivu.
The transfer was completed with Jones having entered the final 12 months of his Liverpool deal, while the additional sell-on provision gives the Reds the possibility of receiving a further fee if the midfielder is transferred in the future.
