Cristian Romero has asked Argentina team-mate Julian Alvarez for advice as he considers a possible move from Tottenham to Atletico de Madrid, with the Spanish club negotiating both with Spurs and the defender.
Romero has not yet agreed to join Atletico, who are trying to persuade the Argentina international to make the move. The centre-back is understood to be considering the proposal while discussions between the clubs continue.
According to journalist Fernando Czyz, Romero contacted Alvarez to ask about life at Atletico. Alvarez, who has played for the Madrid club since 2024, provided information about the team and the club, but also made clear that he does not intend to remain there next season.
Alvarez’s stated objective is to secure a transfer to Barcelona. The forward is expected to approach Atletico manager Diego Simeone and the club’s executives again on Monday to ask to be allowed to move to Catalonia.
That situation has added an important element to Romero’s decision-making. While Alvarez was able to give his international team-mate an insight into Atletico, he also indicated that he does not expect to be part of Simeone’s squad in the coming campaign.
Romero remains the subject of Atletico’s interest as negotiations continue with Tottenham. The Madrid club are attempting to reach an agreement with Spurs while also seeking the player’s approval for the transfer.
The possible fee for Romero’s move to Atletico could be €40m.
Romero, an Argentina international, is being considered for a switch to the Spanish side despite the uncertainty surrounding Alvarez’s own future. The defender has therefore sought guidance from a player who already knows Atletico from inside the club, although Alvarez’s position means his assessment is not an unqualified recommendation.
The forward joined Atletico in 2024 and is now pursuing a move to Barcelona. On Monday, he will once again ask Simeone and the club’s leadership to release him so that he can continue his career in Catalonia.
For Romero, the immediate issue is whether to accept Atletico’s approach. The club’s negotiations with Tottenham remain ongoing, and the Argentine has yet to give his agreement. Any transfer would reportedly be worth about €40m, but the outcome will depend on both the discussions between the clubs and the defender’s decision.
At present, the only confirmed development is Atletico’s pursuit of the Tottenham centre-back and Romero’s request for Alvarez’s view. The two Argentina team-mates have discussed the Madrid club, but Alvarez’s own message is that “I won’t be here” next season as he seeks a move to Barcelona.
