Cristian Romero joins Atletico de Madrid as Tottenham receive €40m fee

Cristian Romero has completed his move from Tottenham to Atletico de Madrid after signing a five-year contract with the Spanish club.

The transfer was reported by journalist Fabrizio Romano, who said the 28-year-old Argentina defender had finalised the agreement and put pen to paper on his new deal. Atletico de Madrid will pay €40m for Romero, while Tottenham are also entitled to 15% of any future transfer fee if the centre-back is sold on.

Romero had already said goodbye to Tottenham before completing his switch to Madrid. He leaves the London club after representing them from August 2022, bringing an end to a spell that lasted four years.

During his time with Tottenham, Romero made 156 appearances in all competitions. He scored 13 goals and provided seven assists, despite playing primarily as a central defender.

His departure closes the latest chapter of a career that has taken him from Argentina to Europe and now to Atletico de Madrid. The Spanish club have secured the services of a defender who was a regular presence in Tottenham’s team and who contributed both defensively and in possession during his time in London.

Romero’s agreement with Atletico de Madrid runs for five years, tying him to the club through the long-term contract confirmed after negotiations with Tottenham were completed.

The financial terms include protection for Tottenham beyond the initial €40m payment. Should Atletico de Madrid agree a future sale involving Romero, the Premier League club will receive 15% of that subsequent transfer fee.

Romero’s Tottenham record includes 156 matches, 13 goals and seven assists since his arrival in August 2022. Having now completed his farewell to the London side, he will continue his career in Spain with Atletico de Madrid.

The move was confirmed after Romano announced that the formalities had been completed and the player had signed his contract. It represents a permanent transfer rather than a temporary arrangement, with Atletico de Madrid committing to a five-year deal for the 28-year-old centre-back.

For Tottenham, the transfer brings an end to Romero’s time at the club while retaining a financial interest in his future. For Atletico de Madrid, it marks the arrival of an experienced Argentina international defender following his four seasons in London.

Romero’s final Tottenham figures were 156 appearances, 13 goals and seven assists. His next appearances will come in the colours of Atletico de Madrid after the move from north London was completed.
