Claude Le Roy returns to African football as new Congo head coach

Veteran French coach Claude Le Roy has officially been appointed head coach of the Republic of the Congo national team, marking another chapter in his distinguished African football journey.

The 78-year-old signed his contract with the Congolese Football Federation in Brazzaville on June 22, officially taking charge of the Red Devils as the nation seeks to revive its fortunes on the international stage.

Le Roy arrives with a clear mandate to rebuild the national team and restore competitiveness in both continental and global competitions. The experienced tactician will be assisted by former Senegal international and coach Omar Daf, who joins the technical team as assistant manager.

Speaking after his appointment, Le Roy outlined his intention to strengthen the squad by targeting talented dual-nationality players eligible to represent Congo. Among the names reportedly on his radar are highly-rated youngsters Dylan Bakwa and Bradley Locko, both of whom have attracted attention through their performances in European football.

The strategy is consistent with Le Roy’s long-standing approach throughout his coaching career, where he has successfully integrated diaspora talent into several African national teams.

Widely regarded as one of the most experienced coaches in African football history, Le Roy has previously managed numerous national teams across the continent and led several countries at major tournaments, earning a reputation for developing competitive sides and nurturing local talent.

His appointment signals a renewed ambition from the Congolese Football Federation, which hopes his experience and network can help transform the national team into a stronger force in African football.

Le Roy is expected to begin work immediately, assessing the current squad while preparing plans for upcoming international fixtures and scouting missions aimed at expanding the player pool.

With a fresh technical structure now in place, Congo will be hoping the veteran coach can quickly lay the foundations for a new era of progress and success.
