Chelsea target Ousmane Diomande as Xabi Alonso plans squad rebuild

Chelsea are reportedly preparing for a major squad rebuild ahead of next season, with incoming head coach Xabi Alonso already identifying defensive reinforcements as a key priority.

Following a disappointing campaign, the London club are expected to reshape several areas of the squad as part of a broader strategy aimed at restoring competitiveness and stability.

Although Alonso’s appointment has not yet been officially confirmed, reports indicate the former Bayer 04 Leverkusen coach has already outlined the profile of players he wants to bring to Stamford Bridge.

According to reports from CaughtOffside, Alonso is eager to recruit experienced and reliable players capable of bringing leadership, balance and tactical discipline to a squad that has struggled with inconsistency.

Among the names believed to be high on Chelsea’s shortlist is Ousmane Diomande, the highly rated centre-back currently playing for Sporting CP.

Diomande has emerged as one of the standout young defenders in Portuguese football thanks to his physical strength, composure in possession and defensive intelligence — qualities reportedly viewed as ideal for Alonso’s tactical system.

However, any potential transfer is expected to prove difficult.

Sporting strengthened their position earlier this year after Diomande signed a contract extension running until June 2030, meaning the Portuguese club are under little pressure to sell.

Reports suggest Sporting would demand at least €60 million before considering offers for the defender, who remains one of the club’s most valuable assets.

Chelsea are also unlikely to be alone in the race for the 20-year-old’s signature.

Several Premier League clubs are believed to be monitoring his situation closely, while European heavyweights including FC Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain F.C. have also been linked with interest.

Diomande’s growing reputation is reflected in his rising market valuation, with the defender increasingly viewed as one of Europe’s top emerging centre-backs.

With a busy summer transfer window expected at Chelsea, the Sporting defender is likely to remain one of several high-profile targets as the club prepares for a new era under Alonso.
