Danny Welbeck, the England-Ghana forward currently at Brighton, is the subject of a surprise approach from Premier League rivals Chelsea as they explore adding experienced cover in attack. The 35-year-old centre-forward, who wears the No 18 shirt at Brighton, is being monitored as an attainable option with only one year remaining on his deal.
Welbeck is under contract at the Amex Stadium until 30 June 2027, but his current market valuation of around €3 million is understood to make a deal financially straightforward if all parties choose to proceed. Chelsea’s interest is focused on short-term depth at centre-forward, with Welbeck’s profile as a right-footed central striker fitting that brief.
The Manchester-born forward has been with Brighton since October 2020, establishing himself as a reliable senior figure in the squad. He has continued to feature regularly in the Premier League, offering flexibility at the top end of the pitch and experience in high-pressure situations.
Welbeck’s career honours include winning the UEFA Champions League with Manchester United in 2007-08, underlining the level at which he has previously operated. He later added major domestic trophies with both United and Arsenal before moving to the south coast.
