Cheikhou Kouyate reveals hidden heart problem after retiring at 36

Former West Ham, Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate has announced his retirement from football at the age of 36.

The Senegal international also revealed that he had kept health problems secret throughout his career.

Kouyate said the issue affected him at high altitude and in hot weather. During and after matches, he experienced severe pain that would usually last for about five minutes.

He also suffered painful cramps after games, with the symptoms taking 24 hours to pass.

Kouyate made nearly 300 appearances in the Premier League during his career. He left Nottingham Forest last year to join Turkish club Amedspor, making eight appearances for the side.
