Charlotte FC eye permanent move for Ivory Coast winger Zaha

Ivory Coast international Wilfried Zaha appears increasingly likely to continue his career in Major League Soccer (MLS), with Charlotte FC keen to secure his services beyond his current loan spell.

The 33-year-old forward joined the American club on loan in January 2025 and has since shown signs of resurgence, impressing with his performances in the early stages of the season.

His form has prompted Charlotte FC to explore the possibility of offering him a new deal once his loan expires on 30 June 2026.

However, any permanent move could hinge on financial negotiations, with reports suggesting the club may require Zaha to accept a reduction in salary to remain in the United States.

Zaha’s revival in MLS highlights a broader trend of African players finding renewed opportunities outside Europe, particularly in North America’s growing football landscape.

His experience and attacking quality have quickly made him an influential figure at Charlotte FC, where he has already contributed three goal involvements, one goal and two assists, in just five appearances this season.

A return to Europe now appears increasingly unlikely. Zaha remains contracted to Turkish side Galatasaray, but his deal is set to expire in June 2026, and the club is not expected to offer him an extension.

This effectively places his future away from Istanbul, with MLS emerging as the most probable destination.

Interest in the winger is not limited to Charlotte FC.

Several other MLS clubs are reportedly monitoring his situation, including LA Galaxy, Inter Miami and New York City FC.

These clubs have already made contact with Zaha’s representatives as they consider potential moves during the upcoming transfer window.

For Ivory Coast, Zaha’s situation reflects the evolving pathways available to African players in the latter stages of their careers.

While Europe has traditionally been the primary destination, leagues such as MLS are increasingly attracting established internationals seeking competitive football and new challenges.

Zaha, once one of the Premier League’s most dynamic wingers during his time at Crystal Palace, is now adapting to a different environment.

His ability to remain effective at this stage of his career has been key to reigniting interest in his services.

The coming months are expected to be decisive as negotiations unfold.

Charlotte FC must weigh the financial implications of retaining the player, while Zaha himself will need to decide whether to commit to MLS or explore alternative offers within the league.
