Jamie Carragher says Arsenal’s 3-0 victory over Coventry does not fully represent how their Premier League opening match unfolded.
The former Liverpool player was commenting on Arsenal’s win against the newcomers to the top division, after the Gunners secured a comfortable-looking result through three goals scored across the match.
“ A 3-0 scoreline does not reflect the way the match unfolded,” Carragher said.
Arsenal took the lead in the 15th minute when Kai Havertz found the net. Coventry were then beaten again eight minutes later, with Bukayo Saka extending the visitors’ advantage before half-time.
Martin Ødegaard added Arsenal’s third goal in the 49th minute, completing the scoring shortly after the restart. The final margin gave Arsenal a three-goal victory, although Carragher’s assessment was that the scoreline did not provide a complete picture of the contest.
The result means Arsenal began their Premier League campaign with a win, while Coventry’s first match as newcomers to the elite division ended in defeat. The three goals came at different stages of the game, with Havertz and Saka scoring in the first half before Ødegaard struck early in the second.
Arsenal’s goals also came from three different players. Havertz opened the scoring in the 15th minute, Saka made it 2-0 in the 23rd, and Ødegaard completed the scoring four minutes after the interval.
The victory gives Arsenal an early advantage as they prepare for their second-round fixture against Aston Villa. That match will take place in Birmingham on 31 August.
Carragher’s comments focus on the difference between the numerical result and the overall impression of the game. Arsenal won by three goals, but he believes 3-0 does not fully capture the balance or development of the match against Coventry.
For Coventry, the defeat marked a difficult start to life in the Premier League. Arsenal, meanwhile, leave the opening round with goals from three key attacking players and a clean-sheet result, although Carragher has offered a more measured interpretation of the scoreline.
The next fixture will provide Arsenal with an away meeting against Aston Villa in Birmingham on 31 August, while the 3-0 result against Coventry remains their opening victory of the campaign.
