Cameroon’s Nathan Douala completes long-term move to Al Merrikh

Cameroon midfielder Nathan Douala has completed a move to Sudanese club Al Merrikh SC, marking another step in the young player’s career after spending last season with Canon Sportif de Yaoundé.

The attacking midfielder has left his homeland to begin a long-term project with one of Sudan’s most established clubs and has already linked up with his new teammates in Kigali, where Al Merrikh are holding their pre-season training camp.

For Cameroon, the transfer represents another example of a young domestic player securing an opportunity beyond the country’s borders, with Douala hoping to continue his development after spells with Victoria United and Canon Yaoundé.

Al Merrikh confirmed the midfielder’s arrival through the club’s official X account, according to reports cited by Lattaque, although several aspects of the agreement, including the exact contract length and financial details, have yet to be officially clarified.

Douala’s move follows a single season at Canon Sportif de Yaoundé, whom he joined in July 2025 after leaving Victoria United.

At the time, the midfielder reportedly signed a one-year contract that included a signing bonus estimated at three million FCFA and a monthly salary of 300,000 FCFA.

His latest transfer now sees him join one of Sudan’s traditional football powers, with the club aiming to strengthen its squad ahead of the new campaign.

Although the duration of the contract remains uncertain, reports differ on the specifics.

Some sources claim Douala has signed until 2029 on a three-season agreement, while others suggest a four-year deal that also includes an option for an additional year.

Despite the differing accounts, the consistent message is that Al Merrikh view the 20-year-old as part of a long-term sporting project rather than a short-term addition.

Financial details surrounding the move have also not been officially confirmed.

Reports circulating around the transfer suggest Douala could earn an estimated monthly salary of around $13,000, although neither the club nor the player has publicly confirmed those figures.

The same reports indicate that Dubai Royal FC were also interested in signing the Cameroonian before Al Merrikh ultimately secured his signature.

According to those accounts, the Sudanese club’s sporting vision played an important role in convincing the midfielder to choose Omdurman as the next destination in his career.

Founded in 1908, Al Merrikh are among Sudan’s most successful football institutions and possess a stadium with a reported capacity of 60,000.

The club also boasts a squad featuring several international players, providing Douala with an environment in which he can continue his growth.

For Cameroonian football, Douala’s move highlights the increasing number of young players using strong performances in the domestic league as a pathway to opportunities elsewhere on the continent.

Having progressed from Victoria United to Canon Yaoundé and now to Al Merrikh, the midfielder continues an upward trajectory that could further enhance his profile if he establishes himself in Sudanese football.
